Elapsed time between two dates and times
Pick a start date and time and an end date and time; the calculator gives the elapsed time in days, hours and minutes and in decimal hours.

Clock time only: a daylight saving change during the period adds or removes one real hour that this count does not see. How this is calculated.
A time duration that spans several dates is found by counting the whole days between the two dates, turning them into hours at 24 each, then adding the difference between the two clock times. From Friday, October 16, 2026 at 6:00 PM to Sunday, October 18 at 7:15 AM there are 2 calendar days, or 48 hours, minus the 10 hours 45 minutes between 6:00 PM and 7:15 AM, which leaves 37:15: 1 d 13 h 15 min, or 37.25 decimal hours. A plain hours calculator cannot do this, because two clock times alone never tell you whether a whole day passed in between; a date has to be attached to each end. The count is in clock time. When a daylight saving change falls inside the period, the real elapsed time is one hour shorter in spring and one hour longer in fall than the clock suggests, so check any stretch that covers those weekends.

Durations that cross midnight, weekends and month ends
The examples below were run through the same arithmetic as the calculator: days between the two dates times 24 hours, plus the difference in clock time. Several of them start in one month and end in the next, or run past a weekend, which is where people counting on fingers usually drop a day. The last column is the decimal form, the one to enter in a spreadsheet or a billing tool.
| Case | From | To | Days, hours, minutes | Decimal hours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Evening to next morning | March 2, 2026, 10:00 PM | March 3, 2026, 6:30 AM | 0 d 8 h 30 min | 8.50 |
| Friday evening to Sunday morning | October 16, 2026, 6:00 PM | October 18, 2026, 7:15 AM | 1 d 13 h 15 min | 37.25 |
| On-call weekend | June 5, 2026, 5:00 PM | June 8, 2026, 8:00 AM | 2 d 15 h 0 min | 63.00 |
| Two-week project | August 3, 2026, 9:00 AM | August 14, 2026, 5:30 PM | 11 d 8 h 30 min | 272.50 |
| Trucking run with a layover | April 20, 2026, 4:45 AM | April 22, 2026, 7:10 PM | 2 d 14 h 25 min | 62.42 |
| Hospital stretch across month end | September 30, 2026, 7:00 PM | October 1, 2026, 7:30 PM | 1 d 0 h 30 min | 24.50 |
Notice the hospital row. A start at 7:00 PM on September 30 and an end at 7:30 PM the next day reads as one day and 30 minutes, 24.50 hours. Thinking in terms of dates alone, it would be easy to call it a one-day shift and forget the half hour; thinking in clock times alone, it would look like 30 minutes. Only both together give the right answer.
The daylight saving caveat
Most of the United States moves clocks forward one hour on a Sunday in March and back one hour on a Sunday in November, at 2:00 AM local time. For an office job this rarely matters. For a night shift, a 24-hour hospital rotation or a long haul, it changes the real length of the stretch by an hour.
The calculator, like a wall clock, compares the displayed times, so it reports the clock duration. On the November night a nurse working 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM is on duty for one hour more than the clock difference, and on the March night for one hour less. Pay should follow the hours actually worked, which is the principle the Department of Labor applies to hours worked. Adjust the result by hand when a period covers one of those two nights, and check your time clock report, since some systems handle the change and some do not.
Duration, hours worked and overtime are three different things
An elapsed time measures from one moment to another, nothing more. The on-call weekend in the table lasts 63:00, but how much of it is paid depends on how restricted the employee was, and the federal hours-worked rules treat waiting and on-call time case by case. Elapsed time also says nothing about meals and sleep; the break guide covers what may be deducted.
Overtime then works on the hours worked inside each fixed workweek of 168 hours, not on the length of a trip or a project. A duration that straddles two workweeks has to be split at the boundary your employer uses before the weekly threshold of 40 hours is applied (Fact Sheet #23). For single shifts on the same or the next day, the hours calculator is quicker, and to count only dates, the days between dates calculator skips the clock entirely.
