Monday to Friday minus the observed federal holidays. Private employers choose their own holidays; state holidays are not removed. How this is calculated.

There are 11 federal holidays in 2026, from New Year's Day on January 1, 2026 to Christmas Day on December 25, 2026. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day and Thanksgiving Day fall on a set Monday or Thursday every year; the other 5 have fixed dates and can land on a weekend. When that happens the Office of Personnel Management applies a simple rule for federal employees: a Saturday holiday is observed on the Friday before, a Sunday holiday on the Monday after. In 2026 only Independence Day moves, from Saturday, July 4, 2026 to July 3, 2026. 2027 has 3 moved holidays: Juneteenth (June 18), Independence Day (July 5) and Christmas Day (December 24). These dates bind federal offices. Private employers are free to choose which days they close and whether they pay them; the Fair Labor Standards Act requires no premium pay for holiday work as such.

6 holidays are tied to a weekday by law rather than to a date. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday is the third Monday of January, Washington's Birthday the third Monday of February, Memorial Day the last Monday of May, Labor Day the first Monday of September, Columbus Day the second Monday of October, and Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday of November. Those never need to be moved. The 5 date-based holidays rotate through the week from one year to the next, which is why 2026 has 1 shifted observance and 2027 has 3.

The weekend rule and the 2027 dates

The observed-date rule is written for federal employees with a Monday to Friday workweek. A holiday on a Saturday becomes a Friday off; a holiday on a Sunday becomes a Monday off. Employers outside government may copy the rule, but nothing obliges them to, and some simply let a weekend holiday pass. The rule is also why the first day of a year can be observed in the year before: New Year's Day 2028 is a Saturday, so it is observed on December 31, 2027.

The 2027 dates above are computed from the fixed and weekday rules with the same weekend shift, not copied from an OPM page; check the official list once OPM publishes it. With 3 holidays falling on a weekend, 2027 hands federal employees three Fridays or Mondays off that differ from the calendar date, and the working days calculator counts the effect month by month for either year.

Holidays and pay in the private sector

For most private-sector workers the federal list is a reference, not an entitlement. Whether a holiday is a paid day off, an unpaid day off or an ordinary workday depends on the employer's policy or a contract. On pay, Fact Sheet #23 is direct: the FLSA does not require extra pay for work on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays as such. Holiday hours simply join the workweek total, and only hours past 40 are overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act. A week with five eight-hour days, one of them on a holiday, plus six hours on Saturday makes 46 hours: 6 of them overtime at $28.50, for $931.00 at $19 an hour.

Holidays also move paydays and deadlines. A Friday payday on July 3, 2026 or on Christmas Day is paid the business day before on the schedule this site uses, as the biweekly pay schedule shows, and the business days calculator skips observed holidays when it counts toward a due date.

Questions workers and payroll clerks ask

How many federal holidays are there in 2026?

11. They are New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. All 11 are observed on a weekday in 2026, so they remove 11 working days and leave 250. 5 of them are observed on a Monday, which gives federal employees that many three-day weekends.

What happens when a federal holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday?

For federal employees on a Monday to Friday schedule, OPM moves the day off: a Saturday holiday is observed on the Friday before, and a Sunday holiday on the Monday after. Independence Day 2026 is a Saturday, so federal offices close on July 3, 2026. In 2028, New Year's Day falls on a Saturday, which puts its observed day on December 31, 2027, in the previous year.

Do private employers have to give federal holidays off or pay them?

The FLSA does not require it. The federal holiday list governs federal offices and employees; private employers decide which days they close and whether those days are paid, usually in a handbook or contract. The Department of Labor's Fact Sheet #23 adds that the FLSA does not require overtime pay for work on holidays as such. A contract or company policy can grant more, such as holiday premium pay.

Is working on a federal holiday paid at time and a half?

Not by federal law. Hours on a holiday count like any others toward the 40 hours of the workweek, and only hours past 40 earn 1.5 times the regular rate. A holiday week of 46 hours at $19 pays 6 hours of overtime whether or not one day was a holiday. Holiday premiums come from employer policy or a contract.
