Every 14 days from the payday you entered. A year holds 27 biweekly paydays when the first one falls on January 1 or 2 in the right weekday pattern. How this is calculated.

A biweekly payroll in 2026 pays 26 times when the first Friday payday is January 9, 2026, and 27 times when it is January 2, 2026. The difference comes from the calendar, not from the employer: 2026 has 365 days, one more than 26 cycles of 14, so one of the two Friday rhythms picks up an extra check. On the January 2, 2026 cycle that extra check is due January 1, 2027, which is New Year's Day, so payroll moves it back to December 31, 2026 and it lands in 2026. Each rhythm also brings months with three checks instead of two: May and October on the first, January, July and December on the second. Christmas Day falls on a Friday this year, so the December 25, 2026 payday of the January 9, 2026 cycle is paid December 24, 2026. The tables below list every date, with the federal holidays that push a payday earlier.

The counter above follows the 14-day rhythm alone. It reports the Fridays of the cycle that land in 2026; the shift of a holiday check into late December, explained below, is what turns 26 Fridays into 27 paydays on the January 2, 2026 cycle.

All 2026 paydays, month by month

Most employers paying every other week run one of two Friday cycles. Which one you are on is printed on your first January pay stub. A day number alone means a Friday; a weekday in brackets means the check was moved because the Friday was an observed federal holiday.

Count the cells and the totals come out at 26 and 27. The first cycle has 2 months with a third check, the second 3. A family that budgets on two checks a month therefore receives a spare paycheck in May and October on the first rhythm, and in January, July and December on the second. Ongoing deductions taken per check, such as a fixed health plan premium, can also come out a third time in those months unless the plan spreads them over the pay periods it expects.

Holiday paydays pulled forward

A Friday payday collides with an observed federal holiday a few times a year, and many banks and payroll offices close for them. The OPM holiday list gives the observed dates; this page moves each affected check to the previous business day.

Christmas Day is the case everyone notices: on the first cycle the check is due on December 25, 2026 and arrives on December 24, 2026, a Thursday. On the second cycle, the payday due on January 1, 2027 is paid on December 31, 2026, so the extra check counts in the 2026 payroll year rather than the next one. Some employers instead pay after the holiday; if your handbook says so, add a business day rather than subtracting one.

The rare 27th payday on Thursdays

2026 contains 53 Thursdays, the only weekday that appears 53 times, because the year starts and ends on one. A biweekly payroll with Thursday paydays starting January 1, 2026 therefore lists 27 cadence dates, from January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2026. The catch is that January 1, 2026 is New Year's Day: paid a business day early, that first check moves to December 31 of the prior year, and the 2026 count falls back to 26. Salaried employees feel a true 27-check year as a smaller check, since the annual salary is divided by more periods; the pay periods page works through that arithmetic, and the semimonthly comparison shows why twice-monthly payrolls never meet this problem.

Federal agencies follow their own calendar. The General Services Administration payroll calendar sets pay periods and pay dates for the agencies it services, and it should be read directly rather than inferred from a private Friday rhythm. Overtime is separate from all of this: whatever the payday, the Department of Labor counts overtime per fixed workweek of 168 hours, so each half of a biweekly period is checked on its own, as the biweekly pay calculator does.

Questions workers and payroll clerks ask

Which months of 2026 bring a third biweekly paycheck?

It depends on your cycle. With Friday paydays starting January 9, 2026, the three-check months are May and October. With the cycle that starts January 2, 2026, they are January, July and December, the December one including the check moved back from New Year's Day. Households that budget on two checks a month often send the third one straight to savings or to a card balance.

Why does my employer say there are 27 pay dates in 2026?

Because 2026 has 365 days and 26 biweekly cycles cover only 364. On the Friday cycle that begins January 2, 2026, the cycle reaches January 1, 2027, a federal holiday, and that check is paid on December 31, 2026. The pay year then counts 27 paydays even though only 26 Fridays of the rhythm fall in 2026.

When is payday in Christmas week 2026 on a biweekly schedule?

Christmas Day is December 25, 2026, a Friday and an observed federal holiday listed by OPM. Employees on the cycle that started January 9, 2026 have a payday that day, and the schedule here pays it on the business day before, December 24, 2026. Employees on the January 2, 2026 cycle are paid December 18, 2026 and then on New Year's Eve, December 31, 2026.

Is a biweekly payday that falls on a holiday paid before or after it?

The schedule on this page pays the business day before, a common payroll practice and the safer one for cash flow. No federal rule in the Fair Labor Standards Act fixes the direction; your employer's written pay policy does. Each move is listed in the tables, such as the Juneteenth check of the January 2, 2026 cycle, due June 19, 2026 and paid June 18, 2026.

Are federal employees paid on the same biweekly calendar?

Not necessarily. The General Services Administration publishes its own 2026 payroll calendar for the agencies whose pay it processes, with pay period numbers and dates that follow federal payroll rules. Check that document for federal pay dates. The schedules on this page show the two private-sector Friday rhythms and the observed holidays published by the Office of Personnel Management.
